The Wife
It is very interesting to see the films that were nominated this year, since all of them are drastically different, some in good ways, and others in bad. The Wife falls somewhat in-between these two categories, offering a strong film with acting, but a standard film with the rest. Naturally, Glenn Close completely steals the show, and really is deserving of the nominations that she has received, and more than likely will receive finally. Her performance, from the first shot to the final shot, shows a torn woman, dealing with inner turmoil which unfolds throughout the feature. With her acting skills, this was destined to be a good role, but the way that it was told left me wanting more. This is a very cookie-cutter film, following a very basic pattern, to the point where the trailer for the film nearly revealed every aspect of the film. From the beginning of the film, I called the ending, and it was no surprise when the twist finally came. This certainly wasn't a bad film, but it's one that could have been done so much better, and they even could have kept the same cast, it's just the basic premise of the film that became the problem. Altogether, this film does shine because of Close, but that's pretty much it, since it's a rather basic film that features some strong performances. I'm definitely rooting for Close at the Oscars, since she deserves to finally get the recognition that she's worked so many years to obtain.
