Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

For having not even watched the second Fantastic Beasts yet, I wasn’t extremely confused while watching this one. That being said, I’m pretty much over this franchise and it’s constant beating of the dead cash cow.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The biggest difference between this franchise and the original Harry Potter franchise is that in those films each entry felt like a steady progression. Something significant was accomplished, and through trial and tribulation the leads overcame it. While each movie was—in a way, self contained, they never felt pointless, you know? They never felt like filler. FANTASTIC BEASTS continues to feel like it’s just meandering along, never really feeling significant or essential. While the writing in this film is minimally better than the previous one (the first still being the most charming), it still in no way feels like anyone should be bothered to care about what’s going on. For a evil wizard wielding the Elder Wand, Grindlewald certainly doesn’t feel like a threat, just more of an annoyance and I don’t really know what the ultimate goal of this series is. The characters themselves don’t have a sense of urgency, that sense of “We’re in grave danger from this great evil, we have to do something!” that I feel is necessary for the audience to care. Compare how the threat of Voldemort hung over all 8 of the Potter movies like a dark cloud. From the jump in Year 1 you already know how serious the threat is and why “He Who Must Not Be Named” cannot regain a foothold in their world. You know this because of how the characters act, how stories of Voldemort are better off whispered if spoken at all, and how people regard Harry’s survival in disbelief and astonishment. Here the stakes are ostensibly much bigger (Exposure, Genocide, a World War with humans) and yet feel all the more smaller due to lack of clear direction and very poor world building. It’s just really astounding how incompetently this story was planned out and written. Nothing of value will be lost if the series just stops here. You could probably think up a better ending in your head right now rather than wait to see what the two (2) next entries have in store, if they even happen at all, which they shouldn’t. Not only because I have no interest in suffering through another minute of Rowling’s second-rate, amateur, and frankly sub par screenwriting, but also as a future warning re: franchises. This was only supposed to be a trilogy, but after the moderate success of the first they bumped it to five (5). Why? Who can say. It certainly was not for the integrity of Rowling’s creative vision, if it can be called that. Sorry to sexy Jude Law but at least you got two checks king!

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Crab. Dumbledore Is not pure of heart. Boring movie. One of the worst films ever made. Terrible plot. The characters do nothing all movie and dumbledore’s secret is that he can’t do shit.
