Robot Carnival

“To be alone is to be in pain.” “A machine feels that way?” God I loved this. Nine segments and only two did I have to sit and think on before they clicked Intro was wonderful, loved the theme of one's celebration being another's destruction, and the ending was darkly comic where it gets one last party in even after failing to navigate a dune. Franken's Gears was cute albeit drawn out for what it was (man creates and is destroyed by creation, simple yet effective). Starlight Angel was gorgeous but really showed that women are better off being gay than trusting men to not cheat Or ruin friendships Cloud is maybe the simplest while making best use of its style and premise (robot walks past many many clouds representing moments in history and the passing of time until one cloud it repeatedly passes, a curious angel, takes pity and grants it the gift of being able to die one day). Deprive has a similar robot-with-locket-wins-girl-over end as Starlight Angel but sticks to being action for the most part, and it's fun seeing an android get punched to dust lmao. Presence had my best moment that wasn't the intro, the questioning robot that wanted to be acknowledged and respected and loved truly if it was made just to love, and had a satisfying story of a relationship that needed time to develop before the creator/human could accept it for what it was. A Tale of Two Robots Chapter 3: Foreign Invasion was so fucking funny lmao, a delightful kaiju action comedy. Nightmare was so visually busy (by definition, as it's mostly a chase sequence between a robot magician and a human) that it was maybe the hardest to follow; still liked but the only near-miss. A rare case where "peaked at the beginning" isn't necessarily an insult. Great recommend

Robot Carnival

An all over the place anthology that puts you in a bit of a 1980's free fall with riveting animation, curious worlds and even curiouser approaches to its central theme of robots and automatons. The ethereal "Cloud" segment took my breath away.
