A Snake of June

Japanuary '25 🇯🇵 #2: A Snake of June. An unusual but corporeal exploration of repressed sexual desires, mystery, voyeuristic complexities under the blue tones of monochrome and emotions like tears... in the rain. Possibly my favorite of Tsukamoto's (transhumanistic/dehumanization) works so far.

A Snake of June

A Tsukamoto masterpiece. The director's take on erotic voyeurism as a way of dealing with marital sex-life as it depletes and disconnects—seeing it drain, wither away, and bury carnal desires—cut together in his usual unconventional way that's horny as hell. Beautiful!! Never seen so many gorgeous shots of heavy rain in my life.

A Snake of June

I actually preferred this over Testsuo. Maybe it's the running time, the way doesn't feel like it drags itself for way too long. It's incredibly self-contained in its own subversive, poetic, monotonous blue world. One thing I could not stop thinking about was how Tsukamoto sees things. You make certain choices as a visual artist, what to include, what to show, where to cut, and all from specific angles. Every frame was meant to be there. Every shot perfected. Even the disturbing peeping top film photos that our narrator discovers herself, freeing herself into this wicked journey of self-anhilation through the body, desire, wants, needs, and power. Perhaps the best things I've seen in a long while. Also for 2002?? Astounding.
