Ready Player One

Ready Player One

I am still in awe. I'm still in shock. This is my movie. Don't care about the kinda badly-written plot, Ready Player One is an every pop-culture enthusiast's wet dream served in a possibly coolest 3D-using format ever.

Ready Player One

The Year is 2018: Ranked and Reviewed (https://boxd.it/1OIs4) There's a staggering splurge of nostalgia and pop culture references in Ready Player One—things that were expected if you had read Ernest Cline's novel—and it seems only fitting that a pop icon like Steven Spielberg would direct the shit out of it, even if it isn't remotely fantastic. Yet, it's big and bold and wonderful to look at—there's a ton of sequences that weave brilliantly into the next shot, one after the other in an array of excitement and expertise. To my surprise, I enjoyed the heck out of Ready Player One, despite the notable flaws it has. Its characters aren't a big issue, mostly because they're just fine—in fact, a little more development to each one would be appreciated, and at times, some can get a little cringe. Same goes with some of the pop culture references, no matter how connected you are to it. Still, the film is a feast of blockbuster entertainment, and the animation is actually pretty great. Sure, this might disappoint fans of the novel as it does change a lot of things, but even so, it's constant entertainment with a heavy dose of Spielberg flair. 3.5/5
