Millennium Actress
There is a scene where she finally is going to reach him, only for him to walk away and fade into nothing. A love story to cinema, obsession and art. The music is stunning. One of the most beautiful films ever made.

Millennium Actress
This is an Autobiography disguised as an anime film. So it tells the life journey of an actress like the films she once starred in. This is my personal opinion but old school anime is boring and I can't understand the storyline, it's like a fever dream.

"Millenium Actress", directed by Satoshi Kon, is a cute film that explores the entire life of an actress through a half documentary/half dreamlike narrative and I enjoyed it so much! The animation is very lively and fun, the soundtrack is a stark contrast, but somehow it works really well and the last 10 minutes destroyed me. Seriously, it was like a gut punch and it made me ugly cry. Good stuff!

JAPANUARY 2026 #3 ANIME FILM ___________ decided to use this one to check off the one Satoshi Kon feature film I haven’t seen yet. I like how this one plays with time and memory, sort of gives it this surreal bend which i think is common to varying degrees in Kon’s works. but i think it serves the film well in this case, focusing heavily on the immortalization of ideas through the art of cinema. the film explores a lot of ambitious ideas both in its narrative structure and style, but i think it’s pulled off well and in an emotionally satisfying way by the end.

❝I hate you more than I can bear. And I love you more than I can bear.❞ 𐄁──── 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚.────𐄁 Another banger from Satoshi Kon, Millennium Actress cleverly blends Chiyoko's life with her films, creating a visually stunning narrative with emotional depth. I'll admit, I got a little confused around halfway because I wasn't sure if I was seeing her search for the man or the plot of one of her films, but it soon became clear, and I loved the montage of her journey throughout her career. I was also a bit wary of rooting for her finding the man because they met when she was a kid, and they only interacted for a few hours, so I was glad when Chiyoko revealed that she loved the chase more than him. The voice-acting was excellent, and the animation, as expected from a Satoshi Kon film, was gorgeously done. So, all in all, while Millennium Actress isn't my favourite film of Kon's, it's still pretty great, and I'll be rewatching it so that I can understand it a bit better.

Beautiful and elegiac portrait of love and memory.
Millennium Actress
Art imitates life. Millennium Actress has been sitting on my watchlist for quite some time, and I’m glad I finally took the plunge. Satoshi Kon is a director I’ve never been wholly familiar with—having only seen Perfect Blue—but if there’s one thing I can say with certainty after watching this, it’s that it is obvious he has an unparalleled reverence for the power of art. At a brisk 87 minutes, Millennium Actress takes us through the life of legendary actress Chiyoko Fujiwara, weaving together vignettes of her past films and personal experiences into a seamless, beautifully drawn tapestry. In stark contrast to Perfect Blue, Satoshi uses the abstract nature of his filmmaking not to frighten, but to evoke an emotion of beauty and love. His decision to have the documentary crew actively participate in her memories is genius, turning what could have been a pretty standard retrospective into a playful and immersive experience. But the true star of the film isn’t the story—it’s the artistry behind every frame. The animation, the colors, the sheer craftsmanship on display in the film is something to behold.Millennium Actress is a testament to the kind of meticulous, hand-drawn beauty that feels increasingly rare in modern animation, and a deeply emotional ode to the magic of cinema. • Watched in 2025 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/C7Jq6)
