Brother
"God saw you were tired and put you to sleep." This series of family short films reflects much of Elliot's life, where you can feel the essence and soul he imbues in each of his characters. His narration embraces tragedy and loss, reminding us that the memories of what was prevail, shaping who we are and guiding us to what we will be.

Brother
Brother, Takeshi Kitano’s only American-produced film, marks my initial foray into his celebrated and long filmography. Unfortunately, I found my initial introduction to his work through this film not very engaging, at least less than I had hoped. Performances felt oddly stilted, perhaps due to it being produced outside of Kitano’s country, and the general direction seemed aimless. I often felt the film came across as a confounding slice of life narrative, punctuated by the occasional bursts of violence. Said violence, however, was a highlight for me - intensely satisfying to watch (Kitano is a full blown badass). I didn’t hate Brother, but I certainly didn’t love it either. I’m still excited to explore Takeshi Kitano’s filmography, I just hope it manages to grab me like I hoped Brother would.
