The camera moves as if to pry into every single individual life, through every single crack of a building, every single shadow, every single sun ray, just to see the magnitude at which life spirals in and out of constant motion. How does life gather? What do we gather from life? How does it spread? How does it conform? When part of it is lost, where does the rest of life go? La película se despliega como un ir y venir de ideas experimentales, un collage de audacia visual y conceptual que, en su realización, alcanza una perfección ideal. En esta obra, cualquier idea, por más desmesurada que parezca, encuentra cabida en la mente visionaria de Kalatozov, quien logra que lo inusual y lo arriesgado se conviertan en lenguaje cinematográfico. El resultado final, un verdadero milagro, es una pieza tan compleja que hoy en día, ante los estándares actuales de producción y narrativa, nos sería casi imposible alcanzar un nivel de concepción tan intrincado. Cada fotograma parece una pintura onírica, un recuerdo vago y nostálgico de un país inmenso, cargado de territorios, cultura y seres humanos, cuyo alma parece estar siendo borrada por las garras del capitalismo y la erradicación de su esencia. La película no solo nos transporta a ese espacio físico, sino que también penetra en lo más profundo de sus contradicciones sociales, reflejando una lucha constante entre la riqueza cultural y las fuerzas homogenizadoras de la modernidad. En este filme, la complejidad visual y narrativa no solo tiene un propósito estético, sino también una carga filosófica: una reflexión sobre el precio que se paga por la “progresiva” integración al capitalismo global. Kalatozov no solo explora la destrucción física de la tierra, sino también la devastación espiritual que esta trae consigo. Un testimonio poderoso de cómo las ideas más subversivas, en su forma más pura, pueden crear una obra atemporal que sigue dejando huella en el cine contemporáneo.

The cinematography in this film is really breathtaking. It feels like the camera is telling the story by itself and completely puts I Am Cuba into cinematic poetry. The black and white combined with the blurry shots make you feel like you’re in a dream. It’s a must watch in my opinion.
