Barry Lyndon

I feel like I could write a lot about this film, but not today because I'm already tired and also because like many of Kubrick's films it requires another viewing. I'll write briefly; a beautiful soundtrack, some of the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen, a good plot and excellent acting. Perfection.

Barry Lyndon

Probably the most visually pleasing film ever made, Barry Lyndon is a story of lies, deception and power. All the acting, directing and sets are brilliant, especially Marisa Berenson as Lady Lyndon who stole ever scene she’s in. A great film and one everybody should see.

Barry Lyndon

It's a Kubrick masterpiece. The soundtrack is breathtaking. The individual scenes with different camera angles are brilliant. However, the story didn't quite grab me, which is why I only gave it 4/5. Still, it's a masterpiece of its kind; anyone who likes these kinds of films should see it. Unbelievable.

Barry Lyndon

Wow, very likely the most beautiful film I've ever seen. Luckily, I got to see this masterpiece a second time in 4K at the cinema; every single minute of this film felt like a work of art. Ryan O'Neal in what is probably his best role. My personal Kubrick favorite. Everyone should see this masterpiece to appreciate the imagery it contains.

Barry Lyndon

Auteurs: Stanley Kubrick Film #10: Barry Lyndon I've finally arrived at a point in my life that I thought would actually come much later. I've finally watched my last Stanley Kubrick film. After Barry Lyndon, I have seen every other major film from the director, so this is a very odd sensation. Barry Lyndon is a film that left me in shock. A film so beautiful, so rich in story, a film that is unlike anything else Kubrick had done before, and will do after. This film is absolutely marvelous. I cannot begin to describe how absolutely beautiful this film is. The stunning scenery, paired with Kubrick's more subtle score, proves that he doesn't have to create something abstract, but rather can create something that is epic, but feels rather intimate. Barry Lyndon is a perfect film to be the last Kubrick film that I will have seen for the first time. This is a bittersweet moment, but I am so glad that I finally was able to watch my last Kubrick film for the first time. And thanks to Criterion for having such a stunning transfer, it's definitely one that I am glad that I bought when they had their sale, since it deserves to be seen as crisp and as clean as it can be.

Barry Lyndon

"It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarrelled; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now." Barry Lyndon is one of the best films I’ve ever seen, not just because of how it looks, but also of how it tells its story. Beyond that surface level beauty, the film has a deep message. Redmond Barry is a man who keeps looking for something more: status, love, respect and he actually achieves it, more than once. But every time he does, he somehow ruins it. In the part II, for example, we see him looking for ways to keep climbing the social ladder, even though he’s already married to Lady Lyndon and living an extravagant life (that desire is, I think, simply human nature). So that in the end, a chain of poor decisions (and bad luck) costed him everything. By the final part of the film, we’re looking at a man who’s searching for redemption, but, as always, life pissed on him. The ending felt predictable in a way; the whole movie shows us that Barry always ends up the same, falling from the top, Barry's fate was always inevitable, the die had long since been cast. You could see the film as an allegory about fatalism vs free will, or a parable of karma. After all, its meaning depends on the viewer. The message is there, but it’s up to you to decide what it really means. Speaking about the visual aspect, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever made. Every frame feels like a painting, the photography is simply superb, and the world feels so real that there isn't a single moment where you lose immersion. For me, this is the most beautiful film ever made.
