I liked some of the scenes; however, it felt cluttered. It felt like the writers or director wanted to add too many things. Wanted to be a back story for the Major, plus the story of the original film, and the plot from the second film and/or TV series? STOP! Just because you add so many references doesn't mean it will make the movie any good.

Visual stimulation does not make up for a weak film. Knowing the films that I enjoy, I love films that are very visually stimulating, which is one reason why Terrence Malick's films resonate with me so much. I am attracted to films with stunning visuals, which Ghost in the Shell brings to the table. Bathed in neon (an aesthetic that happens to be my personal favorite) and grit, the visuals alone had the potential to make this film a great film. Then why is this film not a great film? Ghost in the Shell is one of the most controversial films to have been released as of late (slightly beating out A Dog's Purpose with its scandal). Numerous people decided to boycott this film due to its casting of Scarlett Johansson as the lead, a character which is Asian in the original anime. Whitewashing is something that has been happening much more recently, which is surprising, especially with the growth of more representation in film (we still are just starting to get more representation, there still is much needed improvement, but it's still a start of growth). If this film didn't whitewash a character and kept true to the original story, this film still wouldn't have been the film that it could have been. The biggest problem with this film is the writing. The plot was interesting, but only at certain points. Throughout the entire film, I felt myself growing bored, constantly looking somewhere else instead of the screen. A film needs to be interesting and captivating, especially a film that is a remake of a well-known anime. The first 20 minutes of the film were the best part of the film, having the most interesting things occur. The rest of the film was drab and seriously lacked the visuals and action that the beginning of the film had. Ghost in the Shell was a film that I did look forward to watching, so it's sad to see that I am disappointed in it. The visuals of the film really made me hope that things were still going to be good, but ultimately, the film ended up being a dud. We need to stop whitewashing characters and start giving these films proper representation.

Ghost in the Shell is Hollywood's techno-rich shower of wire, bullets and identity. Locked inside a hollow strain of sorts and fiddling against an oriental glitz-and-glamour future is this defective American product lacking a realm of importance. For the most part, it's a visual pleasure that does its best to stomach an overdone and underwhelming story. Yes, its fluid in detail and easier to understand than the 1995 anime, but, it dips into the mundane and action-orientated side too much without providing a gratifying story. Johansson does her best to maintain a character driven performance of sorts; her suit and skills are neat, but, there's something desolate inside of her character. She never turns out one remarkable scene of individuality. Ghost in the Shell is basically what you'd expect when it comes to a generic remake like this, other than the fact that its world is stupendously fascinating to gawk at. 2.7/5
