It Happened One Night
For me, one of the greatest love stories ever told. The chemistry between Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert is simply a joy to watch, they really work together well. The dialogue is fantastic and so is the story. This set the standard for Rom-Coms, and I don’t think any will ever be as good. Clark Gables performance is simply fantastic, one of the best ever given, subtle but great.

It Happened One Night is a film filled with a lot of heart, and one that I fell head-over-heels in love with. It’s the first truly great Best Picture winner, which it rightfully deserves. Gable and Colbert have undeniable chemistry, which carries throughout the entire film. It’s funny, it’s caring, and it’s one that I’m going to be remembering for years to come.

can finally resume the random movie challenge since i’m back home. this is movie number 7 of the challenge and it’s a pretty cute romcom. can definitely see it as being an originator or a movie that popularized a lot of the tropes like the “enemies to lovers” storyline. (which i do like when it’s done well) there was some fun little conversations in this one, i liked the part where they talk about how to properly hitchhike. that was pretty funny

At the heart of this film’s enduring appeal is the sparkling chemistry between Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Gable’s portrayal of the cocky yet irresistibly charismatic reporter Peter Warne is effortlessly charming—his rugged confidence, quick wit, and playful arrogance make him the quintessential leading man. Colbert, as the spoiled heiress Ellen Andrews, is equally captivating, bringing a mix of elegance, stubbornness, and vulnerability to the role. Watching these two clash and gradually fall for each other is a masterclass in romantic tension and comedic timing. The film thrives on its road trip setting, a perfect backdrop for some of my favorite tropes: forced proximity, enemies to lovers, a couple pretending to be married, and opposites attracting in the most delightful way. And if you know me, you know I love a slow burn! Every moment spent with Peter and Ellie—from their bickering to their growing tenderness—feels fresh and dynamic, thanks to a sharp screenplay and breezy direction. The humor, for the most part, still holds up remarkably well despite being over 90 years old. Certain jokes and gags—like the “Walls of Jericho” blanket-dividing scene or the hitchhiking sequence where Ellie proves she’s far more effective at flagging down a ride than Peter—remain genuinely funny and charming. While a few comedic beats naturally feel dated, the film’s wit and energy make it easy to overlook any minor age-related cracks. Ultimately, It Happened One Night isn’t just a great romantic comedy—it’s the romantic comedy that defined an entire genre. With its perfect blend of charm, humor, and romance, it remains an absolute delight, proving that great storytelling and irresistible performances never go out of style. I do wish they kissed at the end, though. 💔

oh WOW….. seeing this on the big screen in a 1930s cinema was life changing… both claudette colbert and clark gable were INCREDIBLE and so so so funny. i wouldn’t want to spend valentine’s day any other way than watching this film ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
