The Invitation

I initially wanted to watch The Invitation (2022) but ended up watching this movie instead and I don't regret it, I think I like this one more than the 2022 movies. This movie is very slow burning, but throughout the movie we are made to guess what is going on and who is the villain. But in the final act, everything is revealed and BAAM! It blows my mind 🤯 Luckily I'm an introvert and don't like going to reunions or dinner parties, I'd rather just stay home.

The Invitation

Carefully constructed and wonderfully executed, The Invitation has the possibility of being one of this year's best thrillers. With Kusama's precise direction, this film continues to build into an amazing crescendo that will not be forgotten. The Invitation may say that it is a horror, so I went in expecting something scary. But this film is far from a horror. It's rather a thriller, and only a thriller. I don't see the horror at all in this, other than a few key elements that are present in some other horror films. While Kusama only has a few films under her wing, she actually is a great director. While many don't like Jennifer's Body at all, it actually is one of my higher ranking horror films. So, I was extremely excited to hear about this film a few years ago, since I had a good idea of the potential of this film. And she delivers. The slow reveal of the intentions is key to this. Rather than rushing into the film, the slow introduction creates an amazing atmosphere that continues throughout. The mystery never seemed to let up, with me having absolutely no idea where the film was leading. In that, this thriller did a fantastic job at keeping me on edge. Altogether, The Invitation is a fantastic thriller that kept me on edge during the entire film. I am extremely excited to see what else Kusama puts out (I am really excited to see XX), since she is capable of producing fantastic films.

The Invitation

Karyn Kusama's stellar thriller The Invitation manages to balance tension with a great plot, as well as interesting characters. These elements all work together, creating a film that is very entertaining and leaves you guessing what exactly is going to happen next. This watch really solidified Kusama as a director for me, which makes me hopeful to see what other features she puts out. This would also be a very good film to double feature with Coherence, both completely different takes on hosting a dinner party.

The Invitation

HOOPTOBER #8 CULT/CONSPIRACY FILM 3 ________ this challenge keeps spoiling me on films where the fact that it’s a cult is a twist because….i have it under the “cult” category. i probably would have guessed it. watched this while fighting off a bitch of a headache so my brain’s kind of scrambled. cool premise, the whole dinner party aspect reminded me of Coherence. (though besides that and the more low-budget casual filmmaking style they are doing different things) it drags in the middle a bit but honestly it’s kind of overhated on here yeah it isn’t perfect but like idk idk maybe i can forgive a slow burn more than most people…it’s about tension honey. moral of the story: never go to a dinner party ever

The Invitation

Nice double feature with 1BR, Kusama is great at wringing the tension from a somewhat predictable script. Really appreciated LMG’s performance more this time around.

The Invitation

Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation is one extremely tense and overwhelming thriller to come out of 2016. Moving at a fiery slow-burning pace, with tension so thick and dense, it's really hard to come by another film with the same triumph. The film works like a beautiful psychological thriller, tossing in both doubtful and undoubtful questions, and giving off the eerie sense of something being just not right. Essentially we view the film through the perspective of Logan Marshall-Green’s character. It's insanely great. His character is rich with detail; a man with grief, self-burden, and paranoia, bubbling over the film's underlying themes. He's an interesting character study to say the least, and Marshall-Green’s performance of the character is utterly fantastic. His conflicted past messes with his mind and ultimately influences his actions. Flashbacks appear here and there, exhibiting an interesting passage in discovering why he acts so rigid. Each scene he feels suspicious with the strangeness around him. He's unsettled by the questionable realness of it all. And the audience feels exactly alike. It makes way for a bombastic finale to get your heart beating fast. Which is damn satisfying. The Invitation is not only a sturdy, intense ride, but it's a top contender for 2016, and of course, most definitely worth checking the fuck out.
