Style Wars
“I am not a graffiti artist. I am a graffiti bomber.” An incredibly well-made documentary focusing a lot on the subculture tied to graffiti art and rising popularity of hip-hop during the late 70’s. It does a good job of not taking sides on the argument it presents, though it is more invested in the graffiti artists than anything else. I love the presentation and just how “real” it all is. New York, especially during the 70’s, is quite the character on its own. You could point a camera in any direction and you would be capturing culture in its purest form. Seeing that culture clash with social boundaries that have been accepted is an intriguing issue to watch unfold. I understand both views, but the lack of attempts to compromise is a big reason places like Miami’s Wynwood has become such a haven for artists to freely express themselves.
