fsdo'22 | W15: Political Cinema: Dictatorship in Argentina Have fallen so far behind on this challenge *sighs* I find going into political films when I have little historical context related to the premise intimidating sometimes, but this did a good job of providing enough context. I didn't feel like I was missing a lot of layers with having just done a little wikipedia-ing before starting this about the war and the horrifying atrocities committed by people in power, and a name here and there while watching. Though, I most likely still missed some layers. Also, this, perhaps, serves as a great jumping-off point to doing more research into this period, as films do sometimes, but I forget. Fantastic character study. Believable transformation and growth. In the scene where Ana reveals to Alicia all that happened to her, I thought the way it plays out and how Alicia's response changes how much physical intimacy Ana allows were very well-done and stood out. What also stood out was the moment when the kid was mouthing the words that Alicia was about to say lol, that's how she probably starts her terms; things like this make it feel real and again lived-in. Also, this is a side note, but Benitez's classes seem fun. Anyway, I liked the performances. The poster is more impactful after knowing the scene they've picked that photo from. I want to know what happens to all the characters next, but I like where it ends. It makes it feel like these characters are people with lives that are still left to live--not just characters with the bows tied and all the answers--that that was only a peek into their lives, and we left them in their present and that they look into the future the same we do, unwritten trajectories, the uncertainty they still have to face. And that what he probably did with the thought of bringing him closer to Alicia, and some warped sense of love/duty, ultimately is distancing them and is him being violent against her over. And about how important decisions are being taken about Gaby's fate, all this conversation is happening around Gaby's identity that she will not be privy to for a long time, perhaps forever. Strange & saddening to think that this has an actual basis in reality, that different variations of this story have probably unfolded in homes of people, living out different roles. I had a thought pass my head about how there could be another movie of Gaby finding out the truth, but even thinking that feels like I'm being reductive and kind of entitled/voyeuristic. It seems like something too personal and intimate and totally recontextualizing a person's entire life to put on screen, even if fictionalized to a degree.
The Official Story
