The Sea of Trees

It's always interesting to hear of a film booed opening night at the Cannes Film Festival. The festival itself is most likely the most prestigious festival to get into, so it's always interesting to see exactly why people had such a strong response to a film. After finishing this, I don't exactly see why it had such a negative first response. Matthew McConaughey gave one of the best performances that I have seen him give (second behind Dallas Buyer's Club). I was honestly speechless while watching every scene with him in it. Wantanabe was fantastic as well. Watts and McConaughey's scenes were breathtaking. The energy that both actors produced were amazing. The imagery was beautiful. From the practically silent takes in the jungle, to the chaotic flashbacks, every scene was just spectacular. A film that really has art-house elements usually is visually stunning, and that's exactly what happens with The Sea of Trees. It's intersting seeing the way that this film was filmed, since it's really different than the other van Sant film that I've seen, Good Will Hunting. It's nice to see a director do something that is really different from their most known work. Really, I don't see why the opening night crowd booed this film. I thought it was a beautiful film filled with extremely strong performances. I did see that there were some times where the tone seemed to change a little, but I don't think that's something that breaks this film. I may never really know the reason as to why this got such negative reviews, but it's a film I would gladly watch over again.
