Haven’t watched this in about 20 years. Kinda crazy Duvall lost to Nicholson. No shot at Jack, but Duvall is just lights out here. But 97 was a stacked year anyhow, Nicholson, Damon, Duvall, Fonda, and Hoffman a real murderer’s row. Still, Duvall is fantastic here, and the film reminds you of just how potent he can be. Was talking with my Dangerous Nights Crew, and mentioned that I think one of his greatest qualities as an actor is how he uses his voice. On its face it sounds dumb, but seriously, watch him here and you see how much he uses it as a tool. Yes, yes, surely all actors do, but really watch him and I think you’ll see my point.  Or maybe I’m just talking out my ass. Either way, Duvall is one of the all time greats, and I really hope he gets a chance to remind the world of that one last time before it’s too late.
