Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Me: Anno, HURRY UP, YOU H A C K F U C C Netflix: Yeah, hold on. Coronavirus: NOT TODAY, B!@TCH! Anno: Let's call it "Thrice upon a Time", we upload a new poster, and delay this again. Ok, i'll be honest. I never made the film. You can (not) redo still a thing, though. Now go to sleep.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

“Bye-bye, all of EVANGELION” ‎ It has been…a ride. Over the last week and a half, I’ve sunk deep into the Evangelion series. After going through the original series, “End of Evangelion”, the director's cuts for Episodes 21 – 24, a subsequent near-immediate rewatch of “End of Evangelion” and then finally – the rebuilds, I find myself feeling a bit lost. ‎ Maybe lost is the wrong word to use here. Perhaps I’m simply more perplexed by not only the rebuilds but this film specifically, the supposed final installment of the series – “Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time”. Directed by Hideaki Anno, Kazuya Tsurumaki, Katsuichi Nakayama and Mahiro Maeda, this film is a stunning visual spectacle that ultimately left me feeling a bit underwhelmed if I’m being honest. It hit all its marks, I had a smile on my face through its entire runtime and even cried at different points. The problem that I have with this film is one I have with the Rebuild series as a whole. ‎ Its view on Evangelion as a whole from the narrative sense and the ending it provides for the entire series. ‎ In trying to find understanding in this new ending, I found myself both entirely confused and enthralled. To some degree, it’s impressive that 3.0+1.0 is able to combine the original series, the Rebuilds and supposedly the manga according to some fan theories (but I haven’t read the manga, so I can’t confirm that). Anno’s ability to take his own creation and blend it, twist it, destroy it and redefine it is nothing short of impressive. However, the steps to get there were not as compelling as one would hope. ‎ From a meta sense, it makes sense. Rebuild Shinji Ikari is a post-EVA Anno. He’s not as wrapped up in his own self-destruction, not as depressed, has more urgency and, more importantly – wants to get rid of Evangelion. He’s been through it all before in a past life, much like Anno with the series. There’s a clear comparison on display here. ‎ The events of the original series are part of a past life that belongs to Shinji Ikari - much like the original series itself belongs to a past Anno. ‎ The events of the rebuild series belong to the current Shinji, one that is a clear departure from the original we all knew – much like Anno himself has been removed from his former self and has changed. ‎ It’s not so much as character growth for Shinji but rather for Hideaki Anno himself. ‎ Which is why I adore it in the meta sense. It transcends the art to dissect the artist. However, in a narrative sense, it ultimately feels like we’ve seen this all before. Which we have. It was “End of Evangelion”, a film that ends with the idea that people can grow and change once they let down the walls they put up for themselves. Once they bare their soul to the world, embracing all that comes with life – the hurt, pain, misery, love, happiness, warmth – that comes with being human. ‎ To that extent, I don’t agree with the Rebuild series thesis statement of the original series being an “unhappy” or “bleak” ending (for both the series and our main characters). Kaworu’s whole goal initially being to make Shinji happy and later finding Shinji to have finally “grown up” in this film feels a bit false, as we see this happen at the end of the original series and “End of Evangelion” (not necessarily his own happiness, but rather his growth, as it’s the entire point of the original series’ ending). ‎ I enjoyed this film and the rebuilds for what they were – a deconstruction of Evangelion. While it doesn’t provide for an interesting narrative “end” for the series, it does provide a decent look at how art can change with time and how the changes that an artist faces in life can create a new outlook on their own former creations and, in a sense, past lives that we all live. Rather than running from it, we can run towards it. Destroy it and reshape ourselves. ‎ We can all change. We can all grow. And we all will. ‎ So, thank you Hideaki Anno and Bye-bye, all of Evangelion.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Secara visual, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time adalah sebuah Mahakarya Visual memanjakan mata. Pertempuran Eva dan kapal kapalnya adalah tontonan yang harus dilihat, menggabungkan bagian terbaik dari animasi yang digambar tangan dengan CGI yang canggih dengan mulus. dammit, seharusnya film seperti ini harus ditonton dibioskop for better experience, ga kebayang kalo nonton di bioskop, that would be fuckin great. Emosional dan pertumbuhan karakter-karakter ini selama Film Berlangsung Sungguh Luar Biasa, there a proof that Hideaki Anno is mastermind of storytelling. Dengan mengizinkan orang lain membantunya membuka jalan bagi Shinji, yang pantas mendapatkan kebahagiaan. that scene with A Joy To The World song by Isaac Watts, MASTERPIECE!!!. Thanks for Hideaki Anno and everyone who helped create this masterpiece. Thanks Neon Genesis Evangelion. What a Great Run, never forget the experience that you gave me. Good Riddance.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

“Goodbye, all of Evangelion.” This was such a beautiful movie and the perfect send-off to the greatest anime series of all time. Thank you, Mr. Anno, for showing me how beautiful life can be, despite the world being an ugly place. This is the best movie I’ve seen all year.
