Rumpelstiltskin

Mark Jones decided to follow up his directorial debut horror-comedy Leprechaun with another horror-comedy starring a lil freak/creep delivering terrible one-liners and going any distance to get what their evil hearts desireβ€”in Rumpelstiltskin, it's unfortunately a first-born baby. And even if this film put him in directors jail for nearly a decade, it's hard not to see the weird love Jones had for bringing old fables into present day and flipping them into horror obscurity via slasher style kills, nightly LA backlot shots, and an obnoxious amount of stalking. Yeah, this is basically a road-trip movieβ€”at one point, our boy Rumpel is driving a stolen motorcycle, and the next he's behind the wheel of a two-trailer truck! Lots of moments like that to either laugh or cringe at here. I was happy with doing both.

This one’s a lot more pointed, following a typical arc, but what surprises me the most is the levity between humor and horror. It’s a hard tightrope to balance, and it takes the right sick mind to make a picture like so. My recent reading of Tantrum (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/7727437411) a has led me to believe that I think we’ve lost this craft, this magic in being able to create a dance between the two with proper choreo. I think the dance requires late 90s nihilism and pessimism, but contemporary emotional temperatures today do not allow that. Good fun. Having medieval Grimm’s Fairy Tale monstrosity set in suburban LA only to far-fling it to the desert, and then some, really makes this a fun picture.
