She's Gotta Have It
He's throwing these punches right out of the gate? Fantastic! All of them, speaking right out at you, grabs you by the scruff and says, "Now, consider this." Pointed and playful... multifaceted, too-- there isn't a one-note treatment here in the slightest. (And on a quasi-polyamory point; this feels more frank and natural than a lot of supposedly 'up to date' takes on the subject, even if the words and framing are different. She's even allowed to feel something about Jamie's sleeping with someone other than her. No one note! The song goes on.) Beautiful photography, particularly those neighborhood and subway shots. My first Spike Lee film, can't believe it. I am primed for this filmography.
She's Gotta Have It
my first spike lee joint! this movie was beautifully shot and so, so funny while also being immensely thoughtful. I wasn’t sure how a seemingly “promiscuous” woman would be portrayed in a movie from the 80s, but I was pleasantly surprised. I don’t get the impression that lee was trying to teach the audience about what a relationship (romantic, sexual, etc.) should be like. rather, this movie is simply an exploration of how and why these different relationships form, develop, and affect us. I loved this one, and I can’t wait to watch more of spike lee’s work. <3
She's Gotta Have It
It's okay. I love the way this film looks and I was loving it until a certain scene. It would have been fine but the movie tries to down-play the scene a bit which was kinda upsetting. The ending does bring it back together though. It's Spike Lee's first film so it is a little rough around the edges but I find it mostly charming for that reason. Nowhere near as good as "Do The Right Thing" but that's okay

“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨.” Which is hungrier, male desire or female desire? The spirit of new york enraptured in different conventions of film narrative by breaking fourth walls and movements. Electric, free-spirit, and so full of song. Gravity breaks over candle-lit sex. otherworldly, liquid smooth, and nothing ever looked so good as the liberation of the black body in this black and white film. Sometimes, New York is meant to be filmed in black and white. This is one of those grand moments. *Loved one grace burst of color.
She's Gotta Have It

"If what you want is total female sexuality, be honest. The beautiful sex organ is between your ears... Not between your legs." #SpikeLeeFemcelPostingOnMain The Rashomon influence is really felt, was listening to Spike Lee and Ryan Coogler's actors on actors interview and he mentioned he took some inspiration when setting up the structure and to me it really adds to my appreciation of the work having seen both. The characters here are really the heart of the film and the way they interact, the moments of over the top cartoonishness they lean into, especially when in proximity to each other, and the contrast between them, physically and personality wise was entertaining and well done. The visuals are great and there is a solid sense of visual clarity and stylistic confidence that sells the whole thing. Feels like a dialogue; like a character study for someone you really can't pin down, like paper dolls describing each other with as much detail as they are capable and i liked that about it. Maybe we don't fully know Nola by the end but the persuit of that knowing was transfixing and kept me glued to my screen. There is a flare of sexual liberation with a deep mystery just below the surface. Also the script is delicious; i ate up every line. And on that note i would be remise not to mention the iconic cancelled lesbian Opal somewhere in this review 🙏 (yeah there was a(1) lesbian in this so that fed me a bit) (let's not worry about the way she's acting) #OpalYouWereWrongForThat #PatheticProblimaticLesbianRepresentationMatters(?)
