Pitch Black
"Not for me. Not for me!" Comfy rewatch vibes, my favorite of the series.
Pitch Black
Surprisingly enough, Vin Diesel’s acting isn’t the worst thing about this movie.
Pitch Black
If you’ve ever wondered how Vin was able to have such a successful career, look no further. As a calling card project PITCH BLACK is Diesel at his absolute best, a physical performance growling every line, with the physicality of a tiger waiting to pounce. Kinda wish Twohy and Diesel had continued Riddick’s adventures in a smaller scale like this, but glad they’ve returned to the character, and will do so again soon.
Pitch Black
“You’re not afraid of the dark, are you?” PITCH BLACK was maybe one of my first sci-fi film obsessions in the mid-00s? I’m talking even before I’d seen Alien or Odyssey or The Thingor anything elsethat influential on the genre. Not having seen it in years, watching it was like watching it for the first time all over again. As charming as it is thrilling, this is a film appreciates and understands the genre conventions it’s using to piece together its story. It has a strong central concept that lends itself to not only excellent dramatic tension, but eventual well-earned character development as well. When the dark comes who will you be able to trust? Your allies? your enemies? What about yourself? Who are you when the lights go down and hope is just a light on the horizon? Will you abandon abandoned your humanity or find a way cling to it? Great, thought provoking questions only enhanced by the narrative and, of course, the character of big dick Riddick. There’s nothing all that original about his “archetype” per se, however, Vin plays him in such an interesting and compelling way. Riddick is terrifying, clever, coldly calculating, and violent. Yet, he’s not entirely devoid of heart or humanity or light. A memorable character if I’ve ever seen one. Plus his eyes are just, well, cool as shit. Also, what the fuck? How is this film lit better, and more stylistically bold than nearly everything that’s being released today? If you want to see how dark/night scenes ought to be lit, Pitch Black would be the film to check out. It’s incredible what this team managed to accomplish on a budget this small. tl;drPITCH BLACK is surprisingly cruel, casually violent, and most importantly the film takes its stakes (and genre) seriously—something lacking in nearly every self-referential, insincere, overcrowded blockbuster being churned out today.
Pitch Black
vin diesel wearing straight up swimming goggles yet was still somehow badass. i expected it to be more cheesy and laughable, was actually really enjoyable
Pitch Black
enjoyed WAY more than expected. just happy to finish a movie after a week of nothing but sex and the city, honestly
