Diary entries forShivers
Shivers
This film was 87 minutes long and I swear to g*d it took Paul Hampton 83 of them to move at a pace faster than 2 miles per hour, when any fucking body else on earth would have tried to get the hell out of that building within 5 minutes of seeing things go that south Feb 7 2021 update: it turns out this fact was funnier on a rewatch than on the first watch, so I bumped it up the extra star
Shivers
David Cronenberg’s debut film certainly is a stunner. Shiversclearly demonstrates what Cronenberg would be best known for, incorporating his sexual elements into body horror. It’s a very different take on the zombie genre, and with Cronenberg’s distinct style, it’s a shining gem within the genre.

Directors Suite: David Cronenberg (The Infectious and Seductive and Bleak) (https://boxd.it/12N5S) Shivering parasites and body horror workouts; sex fueled organisms ventilating hungry horny love and violence; an island paradise at the cusps of dramatic infection. The seemingly respectable suddenly shifts to seemingly sinful, debuting erratic behavior and a mad desire to make love. An impregnated stench of 1970s. Welcome to parasites anonymous, as its sexual lust and wickedness spreads in a matter of kiss. Taste this island paradise. David Cronenberg's debut feature Shivers is a wandering type of infectious horror, drifting at a reasonably sluggish pace for a good amount of screen time. Failing to hold the slightest of interest until its second half, Cronenberg forgets to incorporate exciting and intelligent characters, and instead focuses on showing the spreading infection of the film's parasite. In reality, it isn't just that fun. It's bleak, slow, and forgettable - that is, until the film's exciting enough finale, when it centers in on a protagonist and floods the screen with realistic dread and fear. But, for the most part, Shivers is quite the opposite. A ventilation of dragged out infectious horror. 2.4/5
Shivers
March Madness #1 (https://boxd.it/Sgfq8) Cronenberg's "Shivers" is such an interesting and good debut. it's an incredibly eerie and uncomfortable film that explores horror through sex and what feels to me like STDs. it's able to capture this palpable sense of doom, hopelessness and despair that makes it something genuinely terrifying to experience. the actors do such a great job with this as well especially Susan Petrie (Janine) and Lynn Lowry (Nurse Forsythe). To me, these women are the standouts of the film. they do such a good job of selling that fear and horror of seeing everyone around you collectively lose their minds. Petrie is especially good at this. i love how she's always crying and losing her shit and she's so confused and tired because that is such a great depiction of what that would look like. Speaking of depictions, there is a scene where Nurse Forsythe discovers a dead body and Lowry's reaction in this moment is so great. her face contorts and she can't even scream because of how terrified she is and i really love that scene. Another scene that i think is really well done is that final moment when Roger St. Luc (Paul Hampton) finally escapes the building and you think he's home free but then you just see the group slowly ascend from the other side of the hill and surround him. it's BONE CHILLING to say the least and really hammers home that "we're so fucked" feeling. Shivers, in conclusion, is a really good movie and really good debut by Cronenberg and i'm quite excited to see more
Shivers
This director didnt miss with the 3 movies i seen from him. This one has a good ending as well as the rest. Effects always top tier.
Shivers
I was actually expecting a lot more to happen, but Cronenberg loves his endings so much that he packed everything in his finale, which makes the first two acts a bit of a slug. The fear of AIDS, perpetuated here. Some fun moments, but ultimately lackluster. Although, it does set up the tone for what seems to be his body horror era, the psychosis of sex and death, marriages of mutation and mutilation. Loved loved loved the design of the set. Hit me up if you know where it was shot!
