that third act has left me at a loss of words
The Silence of the Lambs
lives up to the hype. certified classic even with hearing much acclaim for the movie, and knowing some lore because it’s ingrained in pop culture, this was a great watch. fun twists that weren’t predictable, incredible performances from foster and hopkins (unsurprising oscar wins) and intelligent dialogue from both, especially hannibal. i appreciated the twisted humor and scary wit. very suspenseful especially in the last act. particularly enjoyed how menacing hannibal was, aided by many of the shots being close ups staring down the camera. made the viewer feel like they were in the room with him, as nervous and unsettled as clarice was in their meetings. shot well, had the classic feel that is often imitated but rarely duplicated

One of the greatest films ever made. Redefined a genre and set the blueprint for many modern thrillers. Acting, build up sequences and mystery produce one for the ages, undoubtedly brilliant. Love everything about this masterpiece, what more can possibly be said.

O título original, "The Silence of the Lambs", diz muito sobre a natureza do jogo que Jonathan Demme orquestra nessa adaptação do livro de Thomas Harris. E a chave para a dinâmica da obra está na conversa de Clarice com Hannibal que ocorre pela metade da projeção: nesse cena, a agente detalha um evento na qual escutou gritos de cordeiros vindos do celeiro e tentou salvar um deles, falhando em sua missão. Por conta disso, ela continua a ser atormentada em sua mente pelos berros incessantes dos animais, algo que teria um fim caso tivesse êxito no caso de Buffalo Bill - tanto que a composição de Demme faz questão de enquadrá-la por trás de grades, revelando-a como prisioneira de seus dilemas internos (a morte do pai, por exemplo). O tal "silêncio dos cordeiros" que entitula o filme se refere as tormentas pessoais de Clarice (a abertura com a protagonista correndo faz alusão ao incidente, de certo modo) e toda a decupagem do diretor é estruturada no jogo psicológico entre Starling e Hannibal, seja as provocações até as contribuições - os close-ups auxiliam ao inserir uma dimensão maior a cada personagem, especialmente em como frequentemente se aproxima do rosto de Starling, buscando uma proximidade e cumplicidade dramática. Os olhos aqui dizem muito, sejam os aterradores olhares de Lecter ou a determinação no olhar altivo de Clarice.
