Johnny Guitar

“Down there I sell whiskey and cards. All you can buy up these stairs is a bullet in the head. Now which do you want?” One of the more unique westerns I’ve had the pleasure of viewing, Johnny Guitar is a surprisingly expressionistic film directed by Nicholas Ray. Despite the title of the film, our focus quickly shifts from the aforementioned Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden) to Vienna (Joan Crawford), a strong-willed saloon owner that is forced to protect her livelihood and pride after being tied to a robbery by the locals – one of whom holds a vehemently strong hatred towards Vienna for some pretty banal reasons. Reminiscent of Mad Max and it’s narrative structure, our protagonist, which the film is named after, works more so like a vessel to drive the film forward and bring along the audience. The real meat in this story is that of Vienna’s struggles – both as a woman and as a business owner. For a western, Johnny Guitar is quite romantic and genuinely sincere in its depiction of sexual repression and toxic masculinity – mostly defined by every male character that belittles or underestimates Vienna’s battle-ready edge. On the technical side, Johnny Guitar is a wonderful looking film shot by none other than Harry Stradling. While it may falter a little within its third act, Johnny Guitar is by no means a film to ignore – why, I may just consider it one of the great westerns of its time. On a personal note, I hold a bias towards anything that loosely connects to Fallout: New Vegas, so upon hearing Peggy Lee’s wonderful “Johnny Guitar” as, not only the films theme, but the subsequential musical motifs, I knew I’d fall in love with this film.

Johnny Guitar

velocissimamente tra i top preferiti di sempre A man can lie, steal... and even kill. But as long as he hangs on to his pride, he's still a man. All a woman has to do is slip - once. And she's a tramp! Boys who play with guns have to be ready to die like men.

Johnny Guitar

It’s ironic this was chosen by a patron. Typically I write something afterwards, whether it’s a full scale capsule or just some notes I pieced together and send to them—but Johnny Guitar seems like it was made solely to spite that, like it knows it’s an experience and not something meant to be written about. If anything, this reminds me of Huston’s REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE—an odd psychosexual melodrama in its own right, but this wears the skin of a Western. There’s no revisionism here, no reversal of the classic tropes. It simply uses them, heightens them to almost-absurdity before it pulls away, moves in a direction you weren’t expecting. Everything is so gorgeously framed and textured. The Trucolor process is beautiful, and it doesn’t make me think of the dozens of westerns I’ve seen—it reminds me of SINGIN IN THE RAIN the way everyone moves, calculates their moves, choreographs each bullet. This one will stick with me for a while.
