"𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘨𝘰 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦.” Adolescence will always be misunderstood no matter the decade. Search for meaning, not just for the self, but for community. How you house yourself, how you become part of something larger. Will your town allow that? Will distant relatives understand you? What is the stance of prejudice? Romero subverses the vampire genre by way of teen angst. This perhaps doesn’t look all too impressive with what vampire narratives we have now, but there’s punk here. Look at the scene where Amplas parkours his way through a two story house to sedate a wife and her mistertress. Playful and full of evil, but all done with a teen prank charm. There was something new and fresh here, much different than the Noseferatu stories that came before. Amplas, at times, flattens his character, but it’s one that he grows into. And that’s all we can hope, a change, a little geste in character, to round out a life.
