Now that I've let this movie sit (over 4 months after the initial showing), I really dislike this film. It wasn't scary. It wasn't original. There were some interesting aspects, but nothing worth noting. It relied on jump scares and jump scares only. Unlike The Conjuring, this film has no atmosphere. You hear a few bangs and something pops out. Scary. What makes this film truly scary is the fact that I actually enjoyed it when I first saw it. Now, I truly see how terrible of a movie this was.

After watching Annabelle: Creation, I thought it was time to revisit the first film, since it has a sour image in my mind. After watching it again, I can truly appreciate what Annabelle: Creation did for this universe. Annabelle just isn't scary. There are moments where there is tension, but the film relies too much on cheap jump scares and nothing more, making the film just an average horror film. This film did add some interesting mythology to the Annabelle story, which is really the only thing that this film did right. Annabelle: Creation did an amazing job at tying in the events of this film into the plot of that one, making the whole Annabelle doll much scarier than this film made it out to be. This film isn't scary one bit, but still paved the way for Annabelle: Creation, which makes it at least matter a little bit in the scheme of things.

It's a surprise when a bad film gets a rewatch and it's actually not as terrible as you remember it being. This is exactly the case with Annabelle, a film that I have always known to be a terrible horror film. While it's not the worst horror films out there, it's certainly not the best. I can give props to the director for attempting to create a creepy atmosphere, which really does shine through in certain scenes, but isn't consistent throughout the entire film. There are some good scares, but nothing that is truly horrifying, just typical jump scares with nothing being terribly scary. Annabelle isn't a terrible film, but it is far from being a great horror film. It's a fun film to watch with films, but really isn't something to take seriously, just something to watch and laugh at while getting a couple of decent scares.

É um filme assistivel ao meu ver, ele é cheio de incoerências e daquelas conveniências de roteiro sem explicação. Mas, eu enxergo como um filme introdutório ao universo da Anabelle e até que entretém. O que eu mais gosto é da direção, essas cenas gravando a boneca e os personagens de fundo sempre me fazem inclinar pra ver se ela vai se mexer e ela nunca se mexe. Além de que tem uma introdução tão boa, pra todo o resto do filme ser só jumpscare e bobagens. Eu gosto quando "o mal" em um filme de terror não é algo palpável ou exatamente visível, da mais medo, eu sinto que quando é muito gráfico e não bem feito a coisa se torna fantasiosa demais e pouco fantasmagórica e aqui eles acertam em deixar esse ser meio que as escondidas, com poucos momentos físicos. Mas em geral o roteiro é medíocre, tem questões sem explicações, decisões burras dos personagens pra que o filme aconteça e fora o final que apesar de justificado é ridículo. Não curto esvaziar pauta, mas eu sinto um tom racista: A única personagem negra presente no filme (personagem essa que surge do nada) existe somente para salvar e auxiliar uma família branca, enfim.
