Whiplash
When I first saw this movie I was fairly young, fifth grade, and was not yet in concert band and because of this I despised the movie and thought it was slow and boring. About a year and a half after I saw it I rewatched it after joining band and quickly realized how wrong I was originally and each time I watch it it gets better. At times the movie can seem slow but with J.K. Simmons’ lively performance as Terrance Fletcher it hardly gets slow and when it does it quickly turns around. Speaking of performances Miles Teller, who in my opinion is usually a bit annoying, gives a great performance as someone who is seeking and needs approval from the only person who can/will give it to him and will do anything to get it. The final drum scene was brilliant with little dialogue and just music with what is basically a duel between Andrew and Fletcher. The wardrobe is accurate to what band directors want but it also gives symbolism to Andrew’s journey, when Andrew first meets Fletcher he’s wearing full white and as he slowly gets deeper into the music he regularly wears black up until he’s kicked out of Fletcher’s band where he goes back to wearing lighter clothing up until he joins Fletcher’s new jazz band.

Whiplash
i was a music student for 7 years and i've seen a lot of drummers try to replicate andrew's solo in caravan but i have yet to see someone who does it as good as him. truly mind blowing.
Whiplash
One of the most intense film I’ve ever seen, Whiplash does everything right. From minute one it gets you invested and the story flows at a fast, gripping pace. The storytelling is fantastic and visuals are also stunning. A modern masterpiece which will be remembered for many years to come.

are you one of those single tear people? who knew jazz could be so violent

If I sort the watchlist by most popular, this has been what's greeted me at the top since I signed up for this site. It's now off the list! And it is terrifying. Does any of this hold up for actual drummers? Probably doesn't matter, nor does anything much matter beyond those two characters. Abuse, impressionable kids internalizing the worst things, and questionable, questionable greatness. Whole thing's a jazzy death rattle!
