“i feel like i’m suffocating in the middle of the street and no one can see me dying.” a mother who thought she knows whats best for you and who thought she was giving you the life you deserved but just ended up being overbearing and overcompensating for what she lost from her youth and making your daughter accomplish those dreams to the point that you controlled everything in her life from the way she presents herself, her food, her relationship and etc just hit a little bit too close to home. that one scene where noni’s mom dragged her off the stage just because she was just a runner up reminded me of a similar experience, it still breaks my heart to a million pieces and god children deserves better. its not our mothers fault that the world was hard on them but i wish they were better to us. the acting from everyone was fucking incredible most especially from minnie driver and gugu mbatha-raw like wow, they really captured that strained mother-daughter relationship. nate parker and gugu’s chemistry is just so good, something abt a popstar and her bodyguard (pretending that he’s not a cop) falling in love just hits most especially when its done right. gugu mbatha-raw one day we’re going to get you all the awards you deserve i promise!!!
