The Burning

Shocktober 32/31 Very fun slasher with young Costanza, cool Savini effects, and a genuinely entertaining quality teen cast. If you're currently watching/loving American Horror Story 1984 like I am, there's a lot to like and appreciate from watching a slasher of the times like this

The Burning

Film #5 of June 2017 Scavenger Hunt A Film Released By Shout Or Scream Factory My favorite sub-genre of horror is the one that deals with summer camps. In my younger years, I always wanted to visit a summer camp. The idea of spending time outside, making friends, and being away from parents seemed like it would be so much fun. I realized that I wanted to do this when I watched Friday the 13th for the first time. After that, I've always had a fascination with summer camps, even potentially wanting to be a camp counselor. Now that I am unable to do that, I can still get that sense while watching movies. The Burning is the quintessential summer camp movie, featuring the rowdy teenagers and un-attentive counselors while a killer is on the loose. While this may not be the most unique idea, it's still a fun film to watch. It's campy, which adds to the whole aesthetic of the film. It's not Friday the 13th, but The Burning still is a fun summer camp film that definitely would be a film to watch again.

The Burning

A Bay of Blood: A Ranking of Slashers (1974 - 1990) (http://boxd.it/IoH8) A summer camp percolating in the midst of unbeknownst terror. A slow churn of ripples bouncing underneath canoes and happiness. Ripped straight from the slasher handbook and dealt with acceptable passion and style, The Burning is one of the better camp-slasher flicks released in the golden era of the horror sub-genre. Taking sweet care and time with familiarizing its group of teenagers with the audience, the film is far more skillful than a lot of slashers at the time, despite its obvious copy-and-paste premise. The Burning does something different: it focuses on a larger group of teenagers - some that survive and some that don't - and sparsely zeros in on a few of them, particularly when it comes to the boys' craving for sex. Tom Savini's trademark makeup and effects are center stage when it comes to the killing; at one glorious moment, a trickle of blood seeps down the arm of a brutalized victim, capturing the devastation and absolute shock of the scene in stylish form. What the film lacks however is a final girl and a sense of women empowerment. Don't get me wrong, a lot of slashers treat women as eye candy, but, in the end they kick the most ass. Despite its underwhelming finale that employs a wimpy Alfred and a psychopathic murderer, The Burning is no doubt an entertaining and unguilty pleasure of a slasher flick. 3.3/5
