Eastern Promises

83/100 Ding Dong! In all seriousness, it was perfect until after the fight scene. Then something was off, I wish I could put my finger on it right now and also Naomi Watts did not give a good performance. Viggo and Vincent were brilliant, Viggo especially. Also these are the types of films I want to see, a completely different story set in a short span of time even.

Eastern Promises

I loved the Christmas vibes, it never even snowed but I could feel it throughout.  Viggo Mortensen plays maybe the coolest guy ever in this.  9/10

Eastern Promises

Directors Suite: David Cronenberg (The Infectious and Seductive and Bleak) (https://boxd.it/12N5S) A violent life rather than a better one; tattoos that symbolize death, birth, and integrity. Humankind in shades of difference, acts, and religion, beating against an underground crack in a seemingly ordinary world. Welcome to Christmas in Russia; cold, bleak, and home to an underworld of crime. A newborn sees light and a young mother sees death. One of David Cronenberg's most accessible films to date, Eastern Promises is a violent, exquisite, and essential film from the director. Its attentive to realism and the brutal reality concealed from ordinary life. Cronenberg unearths the hidden and shows it to an everyday woman. But what's really amazing about the film is the reveal of a 'good' human trapped inside of this underground. In that way, the audience receives a two-side story with two protagonist and it's finale showcases the duo quite superbly. Cronenberg directs another wonderfully explicit experience. 4.0/5

Eastern Promises

"Stay alive a little longer." Once again we find Cronenberg at the crossroads of desire and violence. The flesh is malleable, vulnerable. It’s modification and degradation—inevitable. On top of his usual thematic threads he’s woven in drama about the Russian mafia. It’s hierarchy, it’s ambitions, it’s volatile men. While that portion of the story may be thoroughly entertaining, the portions with Naomi Watts’ character really brings the whole thing down after a while. It’s not just how she is written, that’s mostly fine, but the film seemingly doesn’t really know what to do with her. Or perhaps it’s better to say that what they did with her character was unsatisfying. The homoeroticism was very much appreciated though.

Eastern Promises

“He is no driver, he is the undertaker. A genuinely underwhelming experience from an otherwise visionary director, Eastern Promises borders on forgettable if it was not for several key moments. Falling victim to a dull direction, you would not believe this came from the creator of iconic films such as Videodrome, or The Fly (though I found eXistenZ to be excruciatingly difficult to finish, which I did not). Like stated before, there are several sequences that are particularly memorable – mainly the amazing bathhouse sequence, a wonderful example of David Cronenberg’s cinematic sensibilities in full display – but this was not enough to pull me back into the film. I found the acting in this film to be incredibly weak, especially from Naomi Watts (though everyone seemed to be hamming it up), and certain creative choices uninspired – Why are so many of the Russian characters speaking English? Why is the narration of a journal, completely written in Russian, spoken in English? So many of these small, aggravating decision continued to pile up to the point I simply wanted the movie to be over. After hearing good things about this film I cannot help but feel very let down – Viggo Mortensen hangs dong in this though, so I’ll give it half a star more than it deserves.
