Breakdown

Reminds me of The Hitcher quite a lot, love the desert setting.  The last 30 minutes are so fun, the middle is a bit of a drag but the first act has that mystery factor that I kinda wish they kept throughout the movie.  8.5/10

Breakdown

A Spielberg/Hitchcock-flavored road thriller, Breakdown puts yuppie townie Jeff Taylor (Kurt Russell) through the wringer after his wife, Amy (Kathleen Quinlan), is taken by a truck driver (J.T. Walsh) who’d offered to drive her to the nearest café when their car breaks down. It’s one of those nightmare scenarios framed around a very specific male power fantasy, á la Taken. And honestly? It works really well. This is a tight thriller that moves fast and doesn’t let up once it hits the gas. I love Kurt Russell here (in general, really)—pure machismo and his lush hair doing half the acting. He has that effortless presence on-screen that makes him believable as both an everyman and a stubborn wrecking ball. J.T. Walsh is as slimy as ever, playing a gaslighting, murderous family man, and when the film finally has them collide, it’s as intense as you’d expect. I also catch shades of Spielberg’s Duel—not just in the desert highways and the looming trucks, but in that familiar cat-and-mouse escalation, where the road itself starts to feel hostile. I don’t have a ton to say about Breakdown. Great tension, even better practical effects, and a pace that keeps the pressure on. It’s absolutely a film of its time, but it knows exactly what it’s doing—and it does it really, really well. ᐅWatched in 2025 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/C7Jq6)
