The Crucible
I sometimes forget how awesome Winona Ryder is. She gives an all time villain performance here, one that seems to be incredibly overlooked. DDL is asked to do less lifting here, especially in the first half of the film, which is refreshing to see. I love his work, but it’s nice to see him take a backseat to a more screen-dominating presence that Ryder delivers in this. The second half of the film, Lewis really breaks out though. The courtroom scene is pure acting brilliance from all involved, but it is the scene of the confession that we see the true Dan Day-Lewis really shine. It’s the scene we’ve all watched before, and it’s delivered by Lewis as strongly as any in his career. Really great work. There are a few framing/directing/filtering moments that are somewhat questionable, but overall this was a great film that I’m happy to have finally sat down to enjoy.
