Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke stole the show, no surprises there. Film really goes in hard on the good cop/corrupt cop angle and while it isn't a bad thing, it ends up being super straightforward and leaves much more to be desired out of it overall, especially with Alonzo. At some point you realize there isn't a bit of nuance. Like sure Alonzo's actions today were because he's in debt but the film implies what he's doing isn't really news, no silver lining, no benefits. So, Jake doesn't have that hard of a dilemma to turn his back on his superior, leaving it a bit stale at the end of it. I liked how the neighbourhood stood by him though. Very entertaining nonetheless and a really good example of how top tier talent can elevate a film.

“You wanna go to jail or you wanna go home?” i love how it almost instantly throws you into the premise of the movie. Simple concept but effective because there’s a lot you can do with it. Both Ethan and Denzel gave generational performances. I love movies that push the limits. This whole thing is about making a decision, wanting to be something, and questioning what you stand on and how willing are you to get something or be someone. Amazing.
