The House of Magic
All the appeal exists in the very first five minutes of the movie. Tracking shots in first person point of view that dodges cars, climbs up a tree, almost falls, and spirals down the rabbit hole of the whole movie. But after a while it gets tiresome. You soon understand that the people behind the narrative don’t know how to storyboard. It reminds me of a film talk Noah Baumbach had about “The Squid and the Whale”, the great big fight scene where it leads out the door, tracking every moment in such an intense scene. He talked about maintaining the thrill of the adrenaline throughout that whole scene, how it exists within the house and seems to lose its control when the fight ends up outside. But you see, here, it doesn’t work. There’s lack of adrenaline in some scenes, creating a stiff pacing for the whole duration. It’s as if the storytellers here don’t have any comprehension over the necessities of what actions to keep for characters and what to exclude. I don’t see the purpose of seeing our cat leap left and right down a crane. It didn’t do anything for the movie and felt there to show off the “artistry” of digital animation. You can cut scenes to move to the next plot point. Beyond this and maybe the animation that bugs the shit out of me, it’s not terrible and was definitely made for the goopy attention span best suited for a child.
