Back from an era where we got one or two of these big Epic Historical Dramas a year, this one has always fascinated me due to the fact that Oliver Stone has never seemed satisfied with it and continued to recut and redistribute it over the years. I decided to start from the original, though. And yeah. It's a bit of a mess, to say the least. A lot of people have given the storytelling a lot of flak, and while it is disjointed, mainly due to how much they try to tell in the course of the movie, the biggest issue I had was with the actors. Individually they all seemed fine, but I always got the impression that they were unsure of what to do in the film. They never really worked well together; everybody seemed to have different accents, and ultimately it kind of felt like a local theater production with an overwhelmed director. It also seems painfully dated now with some of the effects they use, like slow motion in some of the battle scenes, including the ending, which left a lot to be desired for me. Maybe Oliver Stone was able to rectify some of this in his later edits, but this initial version is a doozy.
