Trick

A really rare case of "something getting some parts that are usually misses in the genre so right, and then fucking up the easy stuff, and the ending, so much you wonder if it even mattered". Every time I think of either a low budget Halloween-based horror release (that isn't just straight up one of the Halloween films, and even the Rob Zombie ones fucked up that) or a slasher film, just the average independent one: it usually sucks. Has a no-name cast. Has few kills. Has little gore. Has a bad soundtrack For the most part...this doesn't have any of those flaws? It certainly has more than its fair share of blood and death in fact! And yet...the characters it presents, you find it difficult to care too much about for the most part (fuck Jamie Kennedy. Omar Epps is fine I guess?), the camerawork is poor for a significant duration of the runtime, it has ridiculous twists and turns over the final twenty minutes, and the ending is abysmal and transparently only for the purpose of leaving itself open-ended for a sequel I'm still not sure it earns This is more words than I expected to write about Trick when I pressed play on it, I'd actually heard a lot of hype and recommendations for it which made me interested in the first place and thought I'd either love it or hate it. And I wound up honestly not feeling that strongly about it at all unfortunately. The things it does right, this little film does excellently. What it does wrong really hurts my desire to see it again, let alone to see the rest of the franchise it desperately wants to create. I know director Patrick Lussier is capable of creating fun films I love to watch (see Drive Angry and the My Bloody Valentine remake, even though the latter similarly has an ending that falls flat in my opinion), and I truly wish Trick had been another one of those
