Velvet Goldmine

❝The world is changed because you are made of ivory and gold. The curves of your lips rewrite history.❞ 𐄁──── 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚.────𐄁 Velvet Goldmine is a mesmerising glimpse into the glitter-soaked glam rock days of 1970s Britain, and society's changing views on identity and sexuality. I always love when non-linear storytelling is done well, and the majority of this film's plot was executed almost flawlessly, though I will say that it lost a bit of steam around half an hour before the very rushed ending. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was absolutely dazzling as Brian Slade, the very picture of elegance and beauty with a very wild edge, while Christian Bale's role as Arthur Stuart was a little more understated, exploring a more middle-class perspective of the glamorous music scene as well as homosexuality. Ewan McGregor's performance was great, but I wasn't a huge fan of his character, Curt Wild, though he had good chemistry with Meyers. The outfits and makeup were so gorgeous, and I liked the music too; on the whole, a very solid film worth watching just for its cast, not to mention the sheer amount of glitter.

“We set out to change the world…ended up changing ourselves.” What an interesting look at celebrity and queerness and how both change with and influence the times/culture. Clearly and unabashedly inspired by David Bowie and his rise to stardom, but still uniquely its own visage. One of the best non-biopic biopics out there.

38/100 Truly just didn’t like it. Understand what it was going for but it’s doing all these different things at once and the message gets lost at the end. Basically I don’t give a solitary shit. Christian Bale is great for the surprisingly short time he’s in this for the middle 40 mins.

Mubi • 06-09-23 • Drama, Music A uniquely crafted love letter to glam rock that is unfortunately bogged down by its unfocused narrative and bad pacing — unsurprisingly, the best part of Velvet Goldmine was its wonderful score and equally as wonderful performances from its leads. Ewan McGregor also hangs dong in this, so…

“𝘈 𝘮𝘢𝘯’𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦.” Sex. Drugs. Punk. Sex sways identity left and right in uncovering the truth of a staged death. What is death? Death of the artist? What comes after? How many deaths are we allowed in a life to kill off the falsities at which our truth lies? Fun sets and direction in its combined use of music video imagination and usual Haynes flair in creating a rich rich portrait of England at the time and the way music changed culture, a look, a way of being. Funny. Sweet. Heightened melodrama. Colorful strokes to something as resilient as Almost Famous (https://letterboxd.com/film/almost-famous/). “..𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮, 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺?”

Velvet Goldmine
