After Life

After Life

If you lost your memories, who would you be? And if you had the choice to keep only one moment, which would you choose? And would that choice define your whole truth? Koreeda uses the idea of “choosing after death” not to ask “what happens after we die?” but to ask “did we truly live before we die?” every scene feels like an interview with memory. People don’t always choose happy moments some remember pain, fear, or simple things like the feeling of the wind on their face. The beauty isn’t in the event itself, but in being aware of it. Memories become real when we feel them and understand why they mattered to us. The souls who couldn’t choose their memories decided to stay behind and help others. It’s both painful and beautiful to be stuck between life and death, yet find meaning in helping someone else move on peacefully. I felt like they symbolize the people in our lives those who lighten others burdens, give them light and hope, while they themselves are still lost inside. Perhaps because they know the pain of being lost, they become gentler toward those trying to find their way. Their presence made me reflect on how maybe we’re all like them in some way we live, we help, we try to understand, but sometimes we forget to understand ourselves. Not because we’re lost, but because we’re still learning how to live. The film touched me deeply. It made me think about my life, the memories I hold onto, and the moments I’ve forgotten. I felt it was a simple film on the surface, yet it quietly entered my soul and made me love life more, even in its smallest moments.

After Life

I enjoy Japanese cinema because it’s so subtle yet overbearing at the same time. After life covers insight on a range of notions and Its so well rounded, characters are so enticing and the concepts are so rich. I also feel like this was a tribute to screenplay and Koreeda is talking to us directly through his characters, I can’t find that long ass quite by Yusuke but it was so real. This caught me off guard. “What a wonderful discovery.”
