Summer Palace

Watched it on MUBI as part of Lou Ye’s retrospective. Have seen it on DVD years ago. Very daring and long Chinese movie by Lou Ye dealing with forbidden themes such as the Tiananmen Square protests. Also full both of male and female nudity. Incredible and beautiful movie, even though sometimes difficult to watch one. The story was very dramatic and beautiful. Also, the music was incredibly saddening, especially the last piece... Definitely a step up from Ye’s Purple Butterfly.
