Diary entries forWest Side Story
West Side Story
Didn’t really enjoy this at all. Sure, the colour palette is nice and the cinematography also works very well, but all the characters are boring and forgettable. Feels like a rip off of Romeo and Juliet. Also, the acting is absolutely terrible throughout. Some of the songs were okay but nothing special. It seems everyone loves it because they watched it as a kid, which i didn’t, so watching it for the first time at 23 feels like it isn’t really made for me, which is fine.
West Side Story
West Side Story
Music that still sounds fantastic today, with the topics of race and culture still being very much relevant, West Side Story is a film that can be shown at any time, and still be relevant. It’s a fantastic musical that translated into an absolutely amazing film. I didn’t realize that this film was two and a half hours, since it flew by, just as fast as Gone with the Wind did. I’m intrigued to see what Spielberg does with the new adaptation, but I know this one will always hold a special place in my heart.
West Side Story
The tragic story of love, laughter, song, and dance that will withstand throughout the ages. West Side Story is one of the most iconic films of all time, if not the most iconic musical. It has been regarded as a modern masterpiece, even after 50 years. What makes West Side Story so compelling is it's music. With Stephen Sondheim writing the lyrics, it was known that it was going to be of the highest quality. All of the songs are really enjoyable, none of which really take away from the film. It stands so strong because of the strong songs. What I think is the most interesting aspect of this film is the basis. It's based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. As you watch, you can spot the parallels between it and the play. You come to realize what is going to happen, and still seem to be shocked when the climax occurs. West Side Story is one of the rare movies that is going to withstand the tolls of time. From it's witty lyrics to it's romance, West Side Story is a story for all ages, and is one of the greatest films of all time.
West Side Story
What a treat it is to see West Side Story on the big screen. It’s a vibrant and beautiful film, only amplified when seen in a theater. It’s been a while since I had last seen this film, so it was an absolute treat to be able to watch it again like this.
West Side Story
Probably my favorite musical.
West Side Story
I watched this immediately after the remake and while I certainly enjoyed Tony’s performance more here, and the entire film as a whole, I think if I had to watch one again it’d be Spielberg’s. Though watching back-to-back, I think they compliment each other well! On its own though, I throughly enjoyed it. The cinematography was stunningly colorful and bold. I much prefer the vibrant look of this movie than the “digital blue” (i just made that up) look of the remake. The costuming of the Jets and Sharks, as well as how both gangs are introduced was also done better here. I preferred some of the singing here too, felt more…professional, at times.
West Side Story
Obsessed with the small masc girl that insists on being apart of the jets like okay vintage non-binary tea Caught myself lacking thinking "wow musicals make me so happy i love this" and then i remembered it was an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (I sobbed) Sidenote: omg I just got confirmation from Twitter that they painted the sharks Brown like I knew something was off the whole time. I just thought it was bad makeup. Holy shit 💀 (To be fair, half the Jets are orange so I felt like bad foundation was a plausible answer)
