Inherent Vice

It definitely needs a rewatch soon because it was kinda hard to get into the story  Cinematography, acting direction and score were good but the story was really difficult to follow and it was an interesting experience to say the least

Inherent Vice

It's the best thing ever. Even better on a rewatch. Probably one of his most unique cast, like i never thought of owen wilson and eric roberts in a PTA film. Hope this film gets a revisionism like tenet.

Inherent Vice

PTA's most ambitious movie yet. I don't know whats going on, but it's compelling. Needed more Del Toro and I'm probably gonna watch this again.

Inherent Vice

❝There is no avoiding time. The sea of time. The sea of memory and forgetfulness. The years of promise gone and unrecoverable. Of the land almost allowed to claim its better destiny, only to have that claim jumped by evildoers, known all too well and taken instead and held hostage to the future we must live in now, forever.❞ 𐄁─────⋆⁺‧₊☽ ◯ ☾₊‧⁺⋆─────𐄁 ranking pta's filmography ⋆˚꩜。 (https://boxd.it/PzB6g) I'll be honest, at a lot of points throughout Inherent Vice I had no clue what was happening. I haven't read the book, either, so I might've missed out on some major plot points, but I have to say I still had a good time. What really carried the film for me were the performances from the cast; Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin were excellent, but on the whole I really liked everyone's acting. And because the plot didn't always make sense, the comedic dialogue kept me going through the mind-melting two and a half hour run-time. I still haven't gotten through all of PTA's filmography, but this film has a lot of elements I've come to associate with his later works (e.g. more focus on characterisation), and I loved the use of varying bright and dull visuals. The soundtrack wasn't as prominent as I'm used to from PTA's works, but what I could hear was beautiful. So, all in all, while I liked most aspects of this film, I think I need to revisit Inherent Vice to really understand the story; maybe my rating will change on rewatch. → film-related note: what the absolute hell were joaquin's sideburns in this film? they looked like hamsters glued on his face

Inherent Vice

Another knockout by PTA. A meandering shaggy dog tale, great cast, great performances. What’s not to love? Perfect Double Feature with LEBOWSKI.

Inherent Vice

PTA #7 (https://boxd.it/RSNkg) Inherent Vice is a weird and wacky psychedelic comedic drama that is easily PTA’s most creative and experimental film so far. It’s follows the story of Doc, a hippie private investigator who starts looking into the disappearance of his ex girlfriend when he finds himself falling down a rabbit hole of activities that are simultaneously mysterious, dangerous and, at times, absolutely ridiculous. The film is quite dense. There’s a plethora of characters, plot points and ideas being thrown at you in every scene which creates this intense feeling of confusion which may or may not be intentional. But with that being said, I won’t pretend to understand the full scope of what’s going on here. Like PTA’s earlier work “Magnolia”, Inherent Vice strikes me as a film that will reveal more of itself through rewatching and revisiting. However, even though I can’t say I fully understood what this film was trying to say, i did get this feeling that the film was attempting to comment on the state of affairs of the United States. It seems to me that the movie was trying to argue that the American Way, if it ever existed, has deteriorated and the country and its people have become riddled with issues such as: The gentrification of communities, racism, fascism, heavy drug use and drug trafficking, the exploitation of the most vulnerable by the upper class, police brutality, and systemic and institutional corruption. It feels to me like the film wants to speak about these things but I feel like I was too busy trying to make sense of all the stuff it was throwing at me to actually see if it did a good job with any of the material. Hence, I would definitely need to rewatch this film to fully understand what exactly this was. Aside from the narrative elements of the film, on a technical level it was quite brilliant. PTA’a uses color here in a way I don’t think I’ve seen him ever use it before. The shots pop and the world seems so alive with all of the different hues and textures constantly on screen. It a very beautiful film to look at. The performances all around are fantastic but my favorites are from Phoenix and Wilson. I think they did great. Josh Brolin was also quite interesting and Benecio Del Toro gave an unexpected but hilarious performance. I love the dialogue here, especially with the lady doing the narration. The language used is so interesting and colorful that it adds another layer of artistry to this film even if it might be at times a bit distracting and/or confusing. There were honestly a few moments where the dialogue felt a bit like PTA was doing too much. I think the comedic elements worked well too but I do think that there were moments where the comedy felt like too much or just out of place entirely. The tone of the film tended to be a bit chaotic and I imagine that it was like that reflect the drug computed haze of Doc’s mind but it did at times make the film feel kind of all over the place and at worst, directionless and gratuitous. I did like it no doubt and the technical aspects are great as usual but narratively speaking I’m not sure if this film was good because I’m not completely sure about what it was trying to do. Maybe that’s something to consider as well but I’m also considering the very real possibility that I simply didn’t understand it and I need to revisit it, which I will, and when I do I hope I’ll be able to piece things together a bit more
