The stuff with Caesar and Armando conferring with each other before going to the city reminds me of the scene in FACE/OFF where Nic Cage is being taken to the helicopter by Robert Wisdom and says his face itches. Really thought provoking at times, probably the clearest focus on social commentary since the first. Great third act, and incredible finale. “I thought you were a myth.” “Well, I’m not. But I will tell you something that is: the belief that human beings are kind.” Finally. Some good writing. Some compelling character acting. What was the hold up all this time? Roddy McDowall’s Caesar instantly becomes a memorable and sharply defined character that is more than capable of carrying several more of these films with the right script. Which is honestly what these films have been missing, compelling characters with interesting arcs/journeys. In a rush to capitalize on the success of the first out, the studio fired off a bunch of sequels with little to no direction (as confirmed when i looked into the production of the second film) and with Conquest it feels as though someone finally had a good sense of where to take this story. Great ending as well, nearly as resonant as the first’s.
