Becoming The Beckhams

92/100 I’m tempted to give this a 95 but I’ll stick to 92. I think this is an excellent documentary, very balanced, unbiased mostly and quite true to David Beckham while being inspirational and realistic at the same time. Lots of pointers to talk about - Love for the game - Believe it or not, Beckham has become somewhat of an underrated footballer because of his popularity off the field and just his superstar persona throughout his career. He’s an exceptional player at times being the best player in the world. Incredibly resilient and tough - I agree with Phil Neville in that 99.9% of footballers wouldn’t have come out of 1998 better than they were before. Most of em would either leave football or join some small club and just derail their career. And to bear and withstand all that at 23 years of age is absolutely fucking mental, these days people are still kids then. The fact that Beckham stayed on and managed to become the best footballer that year being the star of the treble and arguably should’ve won the Ballon D’or but they gave it to fuckin Rivaldo. Beckham’s career would’ve been perfect then. I do think that Beckham was able to withstand so much abuse and arguably the highest external pressure any footballer has ever faced because of the toughness of his father and the culture that Sir Alex had created with Keane and all those players. He made sure to protect his players no matter what and Manchester supported him because he supported him. Even though they had a bad falling out later on, Beckham still respects him because he helped him back up during the toughest time in the career and that amounts to more than anything. I do wish I would’ve been alive to see the treble because I got goosebumps watching all those clips again. What a time it must’ve been to be an United fan. Now it’s hell. Also the fact that life comes full circle is a perfect display over here because Beckham’s career went to shit for months when he got carded against Simeone and his career got back up again when he beat Simeone’s Inter. This sums him up really. A very very tough and resilient character. Being the captain of England within two years and hitting that winner against Greece is just one of the several perfect moments of his career. He truly is a big game player and arguably one of the most important players on every team he’s been on. Galacticos - I feel like Beckham is a bigger legend for Real Madrid than R9. Yeah sue me! He is. Papa Perez brought them all together but couldn’t build on the project but I’m glad Beckham helped them win the league and end his career there well. Yet again, he prevailed against paparazzi. And his time here is the true show of his stardom because if you can carry the promotional tours of the biggest club in the world on your back, then you truly are the biggest star in the world. He may not have been the best player at all times for that period of 10 years from 97-07 but he definitely was the biggest player, star of football around the world. Also, that England manager is one sure clown saving his own face and blaming it on Beckham like that. Victoria Beckham - I feel like this show portrays her in a slightly negative way but I guess that’s just the truth. At times during this doc, I totally understood her POV that she just wanted a family to stay together because let’s be real, money was not an issue and she just wanted everything to be calm and basically retire early from popularity as a whole while Beckham loved football and couldn’t leave it till later. But at the same time, Beckham is what he is because of football and many-a-times, she seemed to not be supportive of him playing and even though she kept mentioning she loved watching him play. You don’t try and deprive your athlete husband from playing the sport that he’s made a life out of now do you! But again, it’s a complicated marriage like I bet every marriage is. Like I said earlier, I feel this documentary shows both sides to every Beckham story, shows people talking shit about him and people talking good about him. It’s not controlled, it’s not unhinged, it’s perfectly balanced and very well directed with a good score throughout. Felt slightly longer than it should’ve been but I bet it’ll make many people who were not Beckham fans a fan of David Beckham. Lucky for me, I enjoyed this and found it more interesting because I’ve always been a fan of David Beckham even though I’ve never watched a live match of his. Perhaps, that’s what stardom gets you, fans without having watched a live match. He’s a great-looking lad too, that fucking helps. I’m surprised they didn’t show his Mandela haircut although to be fair, it wasn’t relevant to anything I guess. Also another reason to love Tom Cruise. He’s the man. David Beckham - No. 7 - LEGEND.

Becoming The Beckhams

Because, you know, I-- I've never really been into football. I love watching him play football, but then I'd love whatever he does. He could be painting a wall and I'd love watching painting a wall. Do you know what I mean? It was him that I wanted to support. need that for me
