Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere

I was pretty excited when this was announced a few months ago. The Settlers is one of Theroux's (it's pronounced Terux, we learn from one of the manosphere uber geniuses) best works. If this was anything like the one about the human-hating uber-nationalists in the West Bank, it could be a good introduction to equally dangerous but much stupider male influencers. But with it also being a Netflix original, I was worried. Netflix documentaries are usually total garbage, the worst, most derivative kind of this art form. Luckily, Theroux didn't change his style for this one very much, though he undeniably watered down the implicit critique and mockery of the despicable electricity and data wasting piles of garbage he engages with. It also seems like he's kind of out of his depth, or that he hasn't done enough research, because the whole documentary is shallow and ultimately, purposeless. We kind of hear and see the discourses spewed by these figures, but it all feels detached from the world, not rooted in it, because we don't see many of the consequences of what they say, nor do we see much of the fakeness of their existence. In lieu of critique, mentions the scamming often, but that's not really what matters. What's more dangerous is that these supermegamen radicalize boys into violent misogynists, and Theroux doesn't really go much into it. The representation of women doesn't help either. We get two girlfriends who say they are okay with the one-sided monogamy their ubermachomensch demand, and the mother of HSHokypoky or whatever that uberconservative uberpimp's handle was, who seems perfectly onboard with her son's idiocy as long as it makes money.

Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere

Positively disturbing and actually quite funny. I do wish he had showcased more of his own perspective and really challenged them beyond the antisemitism, interrogating the underlying beliefs themselves, especially since we know (hope) Louis isn’t neutral on the matter. As it stands, I’m not sure he revealed much more than what you’d get from simply tuning into one of their podcasts or developing a parasocial familiarity with these wastes of space - the true bottom of the barrel of society, but it did engross me all the way through, so, brava.

Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere

This generation is so doomed man. Whether it’s men or women many of them seem to live in a completely different world. I sincerely pity those guys who watch these people and consider them their “role models”.  What’s complicated is that their message or vision sometimes sounds good — they claim that billionaire elites don’t want people below them to make money or become independent, so they create systems to keep them stuck in a loop. But the ironic thing is that these same influencers often do the opposite and end up scamming their own audience. Most of their audience are teenagers which is concerning. This was my first documentary by Louis Theroux, and it was pretty decent. I’m glad my parents were strict.
