A pretty fascinating work of... well, I was thinking about outsider art, but it isn't that at all. He's very much a seasoned filmmaker, just usually pursuing vastly different ends. If this is the kind of narrative passion project he and his crew were able to attempt on a nothing budget, mingling as oddly as it does with his own industrial film context, we lost out when this ended up being their only one.

Contender for best title card drop of all time? Genuinely so unsettling and spooky, I really loved this! The camera work, the eerie score, the sound design, and the way everything blends together into a nightmarish tale was phenomenal. It reminded me of The Twilight Zone in the best way, this is a new favorite horror film of mine. Intrusive thought: all the men in this film suck. I almost thought the ghost dude was less creepy than the guy who kept trying to sleep with her.

Early this morning, I was in the mood to watch a classic horror film that I had never seen before. Carnival of Souls was the first film to go through my mind, since it's a film I had started years ago, but never had the chance to finish it. Now that I've finally finished it, I am so glad that I made the decision, since it was an absolutely stunning film. It's not necessarily the scariest film ever created, but it certainly is a film that manages to creep under your skin and fester. It's definitely a slow-burning film, but it fits the film, since a film full of cheap scares would've taken away from the hypnotic structure of the film. Carnival of Souls is a film that I am going to have to pick up on the next Criterion sale, since it's one that is going to follow me for a very long time.

E de dia volta tudo ao seu lugar.” As fantasias ganham asas em Carnival of Souls, que se aproxima menos de um filme convencional e mais de um desses sonhos vívidos que, ao despertar, parecem reais — mas logo se dissipam como ilusão. Se você assistiu Repulsa ao Sexo (Repulsion, 1965), de Polanski, e se interessou por sua atmosfera, é provável que encontre aqui uma experiência igualmente envolvente. Embora distintos em proposta, ambos pertencem ao início da década de 60 e compartilham um mesmo silêncio incômodo, além de uma abordagem centrada na deterioração mental feminina. Suas protagonistas apresentam semelhanças evidentes: Carol, em Repulsa ao Sexo, mergulha em uma frigidez e loucura que a afastam da realidade, enquanto Mary, em Carnival of Souls, permanece fisicamente presente, mas espiritualmente apartada após um acidente, como se habitasse um estado de “morte em vida”. Eu não me sinto capaz de estar com outras pessoas. Mais do que um filme de terror, Carnival of Souls se constrói como uma obra singular, tanto em sua produção independente quanto na forma como antecipa certos caminhos do gênero. Mary surge como uma protagonista que resiste aos papéis que lhe são impostos: não busca refúgio na figura masculina, mesmo quando essa possibilidade lhe é constantemente oferecida, nem se submete às autoridades que tentam enquadrá-la. Há, em sua postura, uma recusa silenciosa que sustenta toda a narrativa. Realizado com orçamento reduzido, o filme explora ao máximo seus próprios limites, transformando restrição em linguagem. Sua influência pode ser percebida em Night of the Living Dead, de George Romero, além de ecos que ressoam em criadores como David Lynch e Rod Serling, de The Twilight Zone. No fim, trata-se de uma obra que, dentro de suas possibilidades, realiza com precisão aquilo a que se propõe.
