THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

(from my Letterboxd @tokomin97) With this second installment, I feel much more confident in considering Castration movie one of, if not THE film of the trans new wave movement (even though it’s not completed yet) Anthology 2: “the best of both worlds” stands on its own as a chapter part of a larger picture, feeling like a compete film in its own right, but is most likely only the half way point of Louise Weards Odyssey. The best of both worlds is a tragedy. Following a young trans woman whose identity and humanity she has no control over, the control lies in the hands of those around her, not friends or family, but Aquentences and strangers. This chapter also elaborates on previous elements of the film, like the dogma/Lars von Trier elements, to which I think the third act here is very Von trier. and it also gets more abstract and dare I even say Lyncian, it’s also absurd in many aspects. Felt much more like a play with its liminal set pieces and long unbroken takes (reminiscent of Dreyers brilliant ORDET) and to compliment the already beautiful bloom in the strength of its filmmaking, best of both worlds also has excellent pacing! Which is established instantly by its remarkably hot and vibrant opening shot, which goes on for maybe 5-7+ minutes. ALSO instantly starting off with display of the actors and actress’ willingness to take things to another level in this film, which feels essential in castration movies provocative and real, authentic sprit and is also an important part of queer cinema as a whole. (Like the films of John waters) Fantastic effort, May Alexandria Walton win all the actress prizes for her work here!!! She is out of this world! And so is a lot of the other cast, as well as the camera work and music, the only flaws I think held it down was it kinda lost me near the end although I’m pretty certain about what the film wanted to convey. Not to mention that the performances weren’t always super convincing, but overall it doesn’t take way too much from its already bursting strengths.
