At times this felt amazing, like a true masterpiece, but at other times this felt messy and rough. The film itself has a lot going for it, the acting and plot are both good, interesting and unique. Its just a shame that this, at times, feels so dragged out and tiresome to watch. The colour scheme is dull, but this seems to be the atmosphere he was going for. Its a good film, but not great.

“You’re a killer.” “Partly. I’m a cop.” Reconstructed edition. Technically brilliant. Visually stunning—the opening sequence is spectacular. Welles was just flexing his directorial muscles there. Additionally, his Quinlan is one of the most reviling, pathetic, and imposing characters I’ve ever seen in a noir. That said I did not love TOUCH OF EVIL. His opposite, Charles Heston’s Vargas is just devoid of charisma, his hot, hairy chest be damned. For my part, this was missing the grit and gripping mystery I’ve come to expect from noir. Though, of course, I can still appreciate its cinematic and historical value.
