Superman Returns
Facilmente uma das melhores obra sobre o Superman e muito ele se beneficia quando tem esse salto temporal, esse distanciamento do herói da terra que retorna depois de um período de peregrinação e junto com a sua volta, seja destino ou o acaso, todo o microcosmos desse personagem estava ausente tal qual ele. Quando o Superman retorna, ele se vê em um período anacrônico. O mundo mudou, sua idéia de utopia parece distante, mas é justamente com seu retorno – simbólico e literal – que as coisas parecem voltar a fazer sentido. Acho muito digno como esse filme se torna uma homenagem e um legado do que o Richard Donner fez lá atrás, seja na concepção do mundo que, embora possua ainda as cores, tem aquele tom meio sépia (muito por conta do período histórico que a Hollywood dos anos 2000 estava iniciando) ou seja por conta desse mundo sóbrio que precisa lidar com um ser fantástico que ficou 5 anos ausente e retornou. Que o Bryan Singer é um ser humano asqueroso, eu acredito, todo mundo já sabe. Mas não tem como negar o apreço estético que ele dá pra esse filme. Os momento de grande eloquência, o resgate do avião que é capturado com uma urgência e um uso de efeitos digitais muito competentes, também se alinham com os momentos de contemplação do mundo. Em determinado momento você vê aqueles momentos de vôo mais plásticos e farsescos do primeiro filme do Richard Donner, tal qual você percebe como a câmera do diretor capta os momentos de vôo com travelings tão suaves. Não só a presença do Super-Homem é seguro, quanto voar com ele. É uma pena que esse filme tenha sido rechaçado na época, pois o downgrade que se sucedeu depois dele, nós pagamos por bastante tempo.

69/100 I’m totally convinced Bryan Singer just hires James Marsden to break his heart and make us feel bad for him. His character is always so sad to watch. To be fair, he gets to be the lead for the most part. Also, I have always liked this movie a lot, my favourite Superman film by some distance. The colour grading is the best part about this film, it makes Superman existing in a normal world seem realistic unlike the Man of Steel colour grading which was just bright and fake. Brandon Routh as Clark Kent is the perfect casting but Superman of course not. Overall, this film could’ve been shorter and it would’ve worked out just as good or even better, the actors were all well cast but they just couldn’t connect to each other on screen. The next Superman movie should take inspiration from this film and just correct it on these parts and we might just get what we have always wanted, the perfect film for the greatest superhero - Superman.

SUPERMAN RETURNS blows for many reasons, but the main one is this: instead of forging its own path forward, it retreads the past in attempt to mine the nostalgia from a previous series of films that a majority of the audience just did not feel. Hopefully a certain director took this to heart…

genuinely really great stuff here. i love the color grading for metropolis, and the general retro futuristic design sells it as a sequel to reeve’s superman. spacey’s luthor is much more menacing than hackman’s while retaining that weird real estate fetish (??) but i’m still not sure i believe kate bosworth as lois. all that being said—we have so many films about the world needing superman, it’s refreshing and creative to see a superman that needs the world. it’s passed him by, and instead of the first hour and a half being cute clois like the first two we get a clark who feels unmoored—he doesn’t even have a place to live for most of the movie! marsden is practically a proto-superman and i wish we had a little more of the dynamic between those two. theres a sense of lean-esque scale that donner tried (and almost succeeded) to use, but with the convincing effects (and much better flying) of 2006. it’s a best of both worlds scenario and i wish we got at least one more with this cast and crew.
