The Stranger

Foreboding and bleak, almost true to the passages however we merely feel the personal insights briefly hence we are left questioning everything (perhaps that's the intention behind it). Gorgeous back and white cinematic lense that helps to create the atmosphere, with some choice that were modernized compare to the book on colonialism therefore the lack of purposeful racism and colonialism make it an almost perfect adaptation

You can also count on Ozon for being very French enough to add faith to an adaptation. Itโ€™s a tidy script where the first half is pitch-perfect, but the last half where the courtroom scenes take place become dull and ineffective. Voisin is the perfect stand-in for Camus, reminiscent of boywonder Starkey in Lucaโ€™s Queer (https://letterboxd.com/bulgogiboi/film/queer-2024/). Very nice to look at. Charmed even further in the black and white presentation. Unfortunately, weโ€™re a few years too late in adapting the Camus novel. I feel like it only worked in the melodrama of the sixties, to which brought me to my viewing of Lo Straniero (https://letterboxd.com/bulgogiboi/film/the-stranger-1967/), which is also quite faithful, but suffers from the same dullness found in Ozonโ€™s adaptation. Where swish-pans and zoom ins and outs give us trying understanding and disbelief in the Visconti picture, Ozon approaches it all from existentialismโ€™s complacent point of view. *I would think Ozon would be interested in exploring the homoerotic tensions through subtext, but his commitment to faithful adaptation wins over. Perhaps maybe in the future we will see an adaptation where queerism can be discovered. Yes yes, I stand by making everything gay, at least, every once in a while.
