I hadn't heard about this until recently, but John Carpenter's first film being a science fiction space comedy he filmed while a student at USC certainly piqued my interest. And I would say it was a solid first entry. Not all the humor worked for me; the extended scene with the alien in the elevator shaft went on far too long for my liking. But that ending where they are arguing philosophy with a sentient bomb was great. Apparently the theatrical release was extended beyond John Carpenter's original vision, so I look forward to checking out the shorter director's cut someday.
