Freaks

What truly makes this movie scary is that they used actual people from the "freak" shows to be in the movie. That is what I really enjoyed about this movie. In today's standards, this movie isn't scary at all. It is more comedic. But I can see why it was banned for many years in some countries. It was controversial. People were afraid watching it. With the movie's rich history, it adds some interest to the movie. Definitely recommend watching on a rainy day.

Freaks

Dawg… What? That was one of the craziest endings to a movie I’ve ever seen, and this came out in 1932? Wild. Some beautiful messaging throughout. The way the “freaks” are shown to be people, real people, was not what I was expecting and I’m so happy. Love it.

Freaks

Tod Browning (https://boxd.it/27fN) • 1932 • Horror, Drama Released in 1932, Freaks was met with a controversy so large it marked the end of Tod Browning’s career as a filmmaker and pushed MGM studio to attempt to “save” the film by cutting over thirty entire minutes of its runtime (#ReleaseTheBrowningCut). Of course, the real reason the film garnered such an outrage was due to the fact the film features actual people with debilitating disabilities and deformities as main characters — and what the audience found more damning was the fact that these characters were presented as sympathetic (one audience member blamed this movie on her miscarriage). Something to keep in mind is during the 1930’s the eugenics movement was at its peak — if you are not aware, the movement is meant to promote eugenics through selective breeding for positive traits while also eliminating “negative” traits. As you can imagine these “undesirable” traits were mainly concentrated in poor, uneducated, and minority populations, which in certain places led to forced sterilizations. Another interesting fact is that director Tod Browning was actually part of a carnival sideshow and circus entertainer himself, prior to his directorial endeavors. This isn’t very surprising as the film focuses more on the day-to-day of these characters and never really focuses on their “acts”. It presents these characters with a surprising amount of tenderness and is yet another reason as to how Freaks was so ahead of its time. Freaks isn’t particularly scary nor do I believe this film should even be categorized as a horror movie, but here we are. It’s a film filled with compassion for a marginalized group and builds on a sense of community. Freaks holds up a mirror to the society that has shunned these groups and invites them to wonder who the real freaks truly are. It’s a masterpiece and another example as to why pre-code Hollywood films rule. ⏵ SPOOKTOBER 2023 (https://boxd.it/pxRFI)
